Empowering Riverine Communities in the Ganga Landscape of North India

In the riverine floodplains of northern Uttar Pradesh, TSA Foundation India (TSAFI) is promoting community-led conservation by creating sustainable livelihood opportunities in villages traditionally dependent on ecologically unsustainable practices. In Pakri village (Sultanpur), where a section of the community historically relied on the illegal freshwater turtle trade, and Chainpurwa village (Gonda), where unsustainable fishing threatens critical freshwater turtle habitats, TSAFI has facilitated a transition towards alternative, nature-positive livelihoods.Through community engagement, capacity building, and market-linked support, women in Pakri have been trained in candle making as an alternative source of income, while women in Chainpurwa are transforming the invasive water hyacinth into value-added handicraft products. To strengthen collective entrepreneurship and financial inclusion, a women's Self-Help Group (SHG), "Chitra," has been established to support production, skill development, and market access. These interventions have diversified household incomes, reduced pressure on freshwater ecosystems, empowered women, strengthened community stewardship.

Building Women-Led Enterprises in the Brahmaputra Floodplains

In the Brahmaputra riverine landscape (Assam), TSAFI has implemented a women-led livelihood and enterprise model in fringe villages such as Biswanath Ghat and Gamirighat. Through structured training, institutional support, and resource inputs, the organization facilitated the formation of a community group (Kaso Sakhi), enabling women to develop market-oriented skills and generate sustainable income. The initiative combines skill development, enterprise creation, and market linkage, with clear production targets and tracking of socio-economic outcomes, showing TSAFI’s ability to operationalize scalable livelihood models.
